The province of Central Finland lies in the western part of the Finnish lake district. Central Finland's total population in approximately 270 000. The capital of Central Finland is Jyväskylä with a population of 85 000 inhabitants. Jyväskylä is a university town and a popular venue for fairs and congresses, both domestic and international.

The Jyväskylä Subregion (pop. 164 850) is one of the fastest developing subregions in Finland. The Jämsä and Äänekoski Subregions are strong areas of industry, well known for their paper. In addition to traditionally strong branches such as the forest, paper, metal and chemical industries a new source of livelihood in Central Finland is provided by information technology, electronics and the graphic sector, as well as in the future by wellness technology and nanotechnology. Services, too, particularly business services have shown positive development.

Lakes dominates the Central Finnish landscape. Central Finland is ideal region for holidaying: unspoilt nature interspersed with hundreds of lakes. Our region provindes active holidays: canoeing, fishing, cycling or hiking in summer and cross-country as well as downhill skiing, snowmobile safaries, snow shoe safaries in winter time. Besides these activities our region offers cultural events: Jyväskylä Summer Jazz and Jyväskylä Arts Festival, the oldest festival in Finland, Time of Music -contemporary music festival. Internationally Jyväskylä is perhaps best known for the architecture of Alvar Aalto and for the world championship rally Neste Oil Rally Finland, the biggest annual motor sports even in the Nordic countries

Central Finland is easy to acces: an extensive network of road, rail and air connections. Many of the main finnish highways run through the province. By road from Helsinki to Jyväskylä the distance is 270 km. By air, Jyväskylä is only half an hour's flight from Helsinki.
