Banska Bystrica

  • How would you define your region's tourism potential ?
The most eminent potential for tourism development is in the predominately mountainous northern part of the region where it is possible to substantially establish winter tourism. The southern part of the region, with its characteristic valleys, is predetermined for summer recreation. Other parts of the region hold unique possibilities for the utilization and further development of viticultural traditions, rural tourism and agro tourism. The availability of the mineral and thermal waters in the region will enable the development of spa and balneal tourism in the spa towns and villages.
  • Does the geographical and/or historical specificities of your region offer potential for certain forms of tourism?
    Yes
The Banska Bystrica region, with its geographical position in the heart of Europe and its variety of historical, cultural and natural assets, has excellent opportunities for the development of all strategic tourism domains, with a view in mind to the protection of nature and landscape.
  • What does your region do about that?
The Banska Bystrica region is actually drawing attention, particularly via promotion at both international and national tourism fairs, with an aim to increase incoming tourism. Moreover, various projects have been submitted within PHARE and EU Structural funds in order to improve tourism services and build up tourism infrastructure in strategic areas.
  • What tourism infrastructures and facilities does your region offer?
In the effort to maintain the inviolability of animate and inanimate nature, nature conservation areas were proclaimed, which represent values of exceptional significance. Natural beauties found at the surface are joined by beauties hidden deep underground. Access is available to many caves, such as the Harmanecká cave, Bystrianska cave, unique Cave of Dead Batmen, and Ochtinská aragonite cave.
