Västerbotten

  • How would you define your region's tourism potential ?
The County is located in the northern periphery of Europe and can therefore never be a crowded destination, but with our resources in mind we believe that the products we can offer and our strengths, together with a safe and well-organised society, will be very attractive in years to come.
  • Does the geographical and/or historical specificities of your region offer potential for certain forms of tourism?
    Yes
Eco-tourism (and the Swedish brand Nature’s Best) is a growing segment in our county. It’s well aligned with our tourist product overall, and can and will be further developed.
  • What does your region do about that?
We have since some years ago been financing projects with the aim to develop more products in the field of Eco-tourism/Nature’s Best. Many tourist enterprises are now, without initiatives from outside, trying to reach the quality level of the brand.
  • What tourism infrastructures and facilities does your region offer?
We have 152 nature reserves, 1 national park, 1 national river, and 244 areas in the EU network of protected nature, Natura 2000 (most of them also nature reserves). The protected area covers 14% of the total area of the county. We have many outdoor activities: hiking, fishing, hunting, adventures, riding, dog sledging, snow mobiles, etc. The biggest increases in tourist enterprises we have seen in the last several years are in the field of adventure tourism.
